چکیده

Aims. We study the stellar and dust properties of a well-defined sample of local elliptical galaxies to investigate the relationship between host galaxy properties and nuclear activity. Methods. We select a complete sample of 45 ellipticals from the Palomar spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies, which includes 20 lowluminosity active galactic nuclei classified as LINERs and 25 inactive galaxies. Using a stellar population synthesis method, we compare the derived stellar population properties of the LINER versus the inactive subsamples. We also study the dust and stellar surface brightness distributions of the central regions of these galaxies using high-resolution images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. Results. Relative to the inactive subsample, ellipticals hosting LINERs share similar total optical and near-infrared luminosity, central stellar velocity dispersions, and nuclear stellar populations as judged from their luminosity-weighted ages and metallicities. LINERs, on the other hand, have a larger fraction of core-type central surface brightness profiles and a much higher frequency of circumnuclear dust structures. Conclusions. Our results support the suggestion that LINERs are powered by low-luminosity AGNs rather than by young or intermediate-age stars. Nuclear activity in nearby elliptical galaxies seems to occur preferentially in those systems where sufficient cold interstellar material has managed to accumulate, perhaps via cooling condensations from hot gas.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Infrared-red Cores in Nearby Elliptical Galaxies

We present the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) observations for a sample of local elliptical galaxies to study later stages of AGN activities. A sample of 36 elliptical galaxies is selected from the Palomar spectroscopic survey. We detect nuclear non-stellar infrared emission in 9 of them. There is unambiguous evidence of circumnuclear dust in these 9 galaxies in their opti...

Recent Star-Forming Activity in Local Elliptical Galaxies

The formation and evolution of elliptical galaxies (EGs) is still an open question. In particular, recent observations suggest that elliptical galaxies are not only simple spheroidal systems of old stars. In this paper we analyze a sample of elliptical galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in order to study the star-forming activity in local elliptical galaxies. Among these 487 el...

Stellar Kinematics of Merging Galaxies: Clues to the Origins of Elliptical Galaxies

There is signiÐcant evidence suggesting that mergers of galaxies produce elliptical galaxies. To determine whether the known kinematic properties of elliptical galaxies are consistent with those of their suggested progenitors, we have examined the stellar velocity dispersion in 11 nuclear regions within starbursting infrared-luminous galaxies. All of these galaxies are in some stage of merging....

The molecular gas in (some) early type galaxies holds important clues to the history and the future of these galaxies. In pursuit of these clues we have used the BIMA millimeter array to map CO emission in the giant elliptical galaxies NGC 83 and NGC 2320 and to search for CO emission from the S0 galaxy NGC 5838. We also present V and R images of NGC 83 and NGC 2320 which trace their dust distr...
